Director’s Note
I’ve been writing “Director’s Notes” for over a decade, yet I feel completely inadequate to write this note. How do I share the process of the last 3 years?
The fall of 2019 we had over 110 children involved in 2 casts in our production of Disney’s Lion King JR. We had 4 school matinees of 500 students each from our SSD elementary schools that were just chaotic JOY!! After the Lion King performances, we had 106 students enroll in our VPA children’s choir programs and announced that in the fall of 2020 we would be performing Disney’s Frozen JR!! Then the winter/spring of 2020 came and the VPA along with the world began a journey that we are all still on.
We continue to rely on flexibility, patience, and grace as we navigate the impacts of the global pandemic. Knowing the VPA’s mission—to provide performing arts opportunities for children that help focus on personal growth, feel joy through artistic expression, and be surrounded by a positive social environment while pursuing those goals—has helped us all to focus on what truly matters…the children. Literally as we plan and prepare as members of our production team we ask “What is best for the children?” It is surprising how much clarity that one question gives!
It’s been a long journey to tonight, but as in every journey…we’ve learned and we’ve grown. We hope the children know that we TREASURE them! We have LOVED watching them learn, grow, and LAUGH!! We hope tonight you see and feel that growth, but most importantly we hope that you feel our gratitude and love. Gratitude for the journey; and love for the performing arts, for you, and mostly for these amazing children who continue to inspire us!!
