Local non-profit, Voices for the Performing Arts announces the open enrollment for their strings program, and upcoming auditions for their choirs and junior musical on September 8th and 10th.  Students may audition for the Sherwood Children’s Choir, Sherwood Girls Choir, Notables Girls Choir, and Noteworthy Boys Chorus.  They may also audition for the Musical and be in choirs simultaneously, and are encouraged to do both if possible.  The musical will be announced by mid August after rights are received.   Please see the vpafoundation.org website and Facebook page for that announcement, and/or sign up on the website to receive the VPA newsletter to stay informed.  Adults may also be involved with choir and audition for the Sherwood Chorale on September 10.  See the vpafoundation.org website to sign up for an audition and learn more about the Sherwood Chorale.
The VPA directors are very well qualified to motivate kids and teach in ways that stretch them and help them truly develop their talents.  John Hillan, Sherwood Children’s Choir director,  has been the music teacher and choral director at Lowrie Primary School in Wilsonville for the past 11 years. He also works with advancing the skills of other music teachers through several organizations. He is currently the Elementary Chairperson for the Oregon Music Education Association, co-manager of the Oregon Elementary All-State Choir, and President-elect of SWOKE (Southern Washington and Oregon Kodály Educators). Cindy Christensen, director of the Sherwood Girls Choir, and Notables choir is a founder of the VPA and has been directing choirs in the Sherwood Community since 2004. She is a choral music education graduate of Brigham Young University.  She currently directs 6 of the 8 choirs offered as well as serves on the VPA board of directors.  Julie Nipp, Noteworthy Boys Chorus has been teaching private voice and piano for over 10 years, is a graduate of Western Oregon University in Music performance, and was the first director of the Noteworthy Boys which began 3 years ago.  Julie and Cindy have both been involved in music directing for the VPA’s musicals over the past years as well.  Robyn Folsom, VPA theater director, has also been with the VPA since it’s inception.  She has been employed by the Sherwood School district for 2 years as their theater program director, and has directed the VPA musicals since 2011.  She has professional acting experience and has been very active in the Sherwood Community on City Council, and with the Sherwood Cultural Arts Commission and Sherwood Foundation for the Arts.  The VPA directors are planning for an engaging and growing year. Please see the vpafoundation.org website for details about preparing for, and signing up for the choir and the musical auditions, as well as general information about all the programs offered including the 3 show choirs and adult choir.
The VPA offers 3 strings classes, beginning, intermediate and orchestra which will resume in September at the Sherwood Senior Center.  The classes will be directed for the 2nd year by Anna Trobaugh. Anna is a violinist, and a orchestra teacher in the Lake Oswego School District. She performs regularly with the Oregon Pro Arte Chamber Orchestra as well as directing a world drumming group and a guitar ensemble.  Originally from Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Anna began studying the violin at age four. She has been teaching privately now for 22 years, directing class orchestras for 13 years, and teaching in public schools for six years. She has a BS degree from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, a M.Ed from Portland State University.  Students and parents alike agree that she  is a very capable, energetic and passionate about music teacher. Please see the vpafoundation.org to sign up for a class and many other details about the program.
